SFP optical module for Ethernet
Ethernet made it possible for two faraway computers to share information between each other, so a computer in beijing could share data with a computer in shanghai. Newer Ethernet standards made it possible for computer systems to send information more efficiently without the risk of losing any data. When newer Ethernet standards were fashioned, newer hardware also was utilized, and items known as SFP modules made it more efficient to transfer large packets of data.
Some were called SFP transceivers, others mini-GBIC, but all of these little products made it possible for Ethernet networks to transfer data across longer distances at a very efficient rate that past transceivers could not replicate.
SFP optical module
SFP package - hot little package module, the highest rate of up to 10G, multi-use LC interfaces. SFP is abbreviation of SMALL FORM PLUGGABLE that can be simply understood as the upgrade version of GBIC. SFP module volume ratio reduced by half than GBIC module, the same panel can be configured in more than double of ports. Other features of SFP Module are same with GBIC basicly. Some switch vendors said the SFP module is small GBIC (MINI-GBIC)

Laser (includes transmitter TOSA with the receiver ROSA)and board IC and external components. External accessories are housing, base, PCBA, pull rings, clasps, unlock, rubber stopper composition. For easy to identify, generally the type of module of identify with the color pull ring parameters.
SFP classification
Divided by rate :155M/622M/1.25G/2.125G/4.25G/8G/10G,155M and 1.25G market is used more, 10G technology is maturing, demand is to increase quickly.
Divided according to the wavelength: 850nm/1310nm/1550nm/1490nm/1530nm/1610nm, the 850nm wavelength is SFP multimode , and the transmission distance is 2KM below .1310/1550nm is SFP single-mode , and the transmission distance is longer than 2KM. 850nm/1310nm/1550nm price is relatively cheaper than the other three.
The bare module is easy to confuse if they have no mark, the manufacturers will make the color of pull ring to distinguish generally, for example: black pull ring is multi-mode, the wavelength is 850nm; blue is the 1310nm module; yellow is the 1550nm module ; purple is the 1490nm module and so on.
SFP, with its small and low-cost advantages to meet the equipment needs of high-density optical modules has become main stream.
